Practitioner FAQ

On the Spot Massage knows that our success is tied to having great chair massage practitioners. We embrace a variety of massage modalities and types of training and we know that our customers like having different massage styles to choose from.

No matter what massage style is preferred, we expect our practitioners to be personable and professional, and we look for highly qualified practitioners who value the benefits of having all of the basics and the details of running a business already taken care of for them. All of our practitioners are independent contractors. This is at the heart of our mutual success and growth, allowing practitioners to be in business for themselves
but not by themselves.

There are three ways you can work for On the Spot Massage:

Rent a regular shift at one of our Drop-In Relaxation Station

Be on our substitute roster so you can step in for a practitioner who can't make their regular rented shift or corporate assignment
Be a part of our team of practitioners who deliver chair massage to companies and events throughout the California Bay Area

What are the benefits of working with On the
Spot Massage?

Build a following of loyal customers at your rental shift

Have the flexibility of being on call as a substitute
Build your personal full-session massage practice through the people you meet; all your referrals to private massage belong to you
Competitive pay rates for providing chair massage at corporations and events

Enjoy the flexibility, independence and stability of being part of a respected and established leader in chair massage!

What kind of experience and credentials do I need to be an On the Spot Massage contractor?
Our practitioners are all independent contractors with your own massage chair and supplies for delivery jobs.(Massage chair and supplies are fully equipped with your shift site rental.)

  California massage certification
Massage permit wherever required by the city (check with the city)
Liability insurance of $1million (with OTSM added as insured)
Your own massage chair and consumable supplies for delivery jobs
Reliable transportation, phone and computer access
An established massage practice (not required but preferred; chair massage is an excellent way for you to develop new clients for your private practice)
A love of people and chair massage, and a responsible nature (that means punctual, personable and reliable, please)

How does it work to be an On the Spot Massage practitioner at a Drop-In Relaxation Station?
A massage chair is provided when you rent a shift at one of our drop-in relaxation stations; if you go to a corporate site or event, however, you will need to bring your own massage chair. You are an independent contractor, not an employee of On the Spot, and keep all money you earn while working your shift. You are free to book private sessions with any customers you meet, which helps you build your personal practice.

A happy "spotnicks" experience
I have worked with On the Spot for 4 years, renting shifts, being a substitute for other "spotnicks" and going out on many delivery jobs.
I have met many new private session clients from working at the "relaxation stations' and can say this has been a rewarding experience. On the Spot cares about their practitioners and the environments they create for them to work in.

How does it work to go to corporate sites? With a corporate on-site customer, we schedule you for a 2-4 hour time slot, sometimes longer. You arrive with your chair and supplies and set up in the designated place. You invoice us for the agreed-upon hourly rate, and we pay you in our next pay cycle. You’re an independent contractor, not an employee.

Can I just be on-call as a substitute?
You bet. We need qualified, responsible and flexible people who can substitute for practitioners who are ill or on vacation. Substitutes must meet the same standards as our regular contractors. Once you’re on our list of approved substitutes, any of our contractors can call you to fill in when they need you. Remember, they’ve already paid rent for their space for that day, and so they may ask you to cover that cost for them, or sometimes they may just take a percentage of your business for the day. It’s up to you to work it out with them. Substituting is how most of our practitioners begin working with us, while they wait for a regular day to become available.

How do I apply?
If you think this is for you, apply online. If we’re actively adding to our list of contractors, we’ll call you back and set up a time for an audition. For the audition, you’ll be asked to bring 1) a copy of your current certification, 2) a copy of your active insurance, 3) your chair and supplies for chair massage.

You’ll give one of our staff a 20-minute massage, and will be evaluated on your massage knowledge and skill, your customer service, and your professionalism. If it’s a ‘yes,’ then you will be added to our “approved” list of massage practitioner contractors, and depending on availability, would be put on our list of substitutes, be sent out to a corporate customer, or be eligible to rent a shift at one of our relaxation stations.
